Frank Wood and Kris Boyd talk about the Cataloochee Wilderness Resort in Jonathan Creek, NC.
March 10th, 2008 Categories: Cataloochee Wilderness Resort
Frank Wood, President of Cataloochee Companies, LLC, made the front page of our newspaper today in an article about Phase 1A of the proposed Cataloochee Wilderness Resort in Jonathan Creek, NC. Phase 1A is the core of the development and makes up 110 acres of the development, comprised of 4 parcels of land.
“Cataloochee Companies has contracts on the four parcels of land, which make up the 110 acres in Phase 1A. These contracts have been extended while the company, he said, continues its background work on the project. Surveying is now under way, and planners are seeing how best the projected facilities in Phase 1A would fit on the land.”
Mr. Wood has been involved in developments for many years, working for Arvida, a major Florida developer that I even remember from back in the 70’s and 80’s, and Disney, where he worked on the Grand Floridian, MGM Grand, Animal Kingdom and Celebration. He was also involved with the Disney Wilderness Preserve. Mr. Wood went on to be involved in developments in Mississippi and Las Vegas. He is now operating out of the Clyde, NC office of Cataloochee Companies, LLC.

Are the Cataloochee Wilderness Resort developers setting up local headquarters in Haywood County, NC?
February 25th, 2008 Categories: Cataloochee Wilderness Resort
A local publication is reporting that the developers of the Cataloochee Wilderness Resort are setting up a local office in Clyde, NC. Dean Moses, Consultant, evidently wasn’t around the building to confirm any plans, but Frank Singleton acknowledged that the Cataloochee Wilderness Resort is opening up an office for the locally ‘famous’ proposed project which has stirred up controversy in Haywood County, NC… especially in Jonathan Creek!
“The office isn’t readily identifiable. There’s no sign outside indicating the company’s presence, and the woman who answered the door at the property declined to identify it as the headquarters of Cataloochee Companies LLC. She directed that question to Dean Moses, a consultant for the project, who was not present at the time.
Singleton, however, confirmed that the location was the office for the Cataloochee Wilderness project. The company is planning to hold public meetings about the project soon, but dates and locations have not been announced.”
BuckingtheRealEstateTrend is definitely looking forward to those public meetings that have been promised! Let’s see if we can’t ’spur them on‘ to schedule those meetings.

Frank Singleton, Cataloochee Wilderness Resort spokesman, answering more questions regarding the proposed Jonathan Creek, NC development.
February 25th, 2008 Categories: Cataloochee Wilderness Resort
Frank Singleton, spokesman for the Cataloochee Wilderness Resort developers, made the papers again, and I found his answers both in the hard copy as well as the on-line version of our local newspaper, The Mountaineer.
Responding to a question about the “expected average cost of homes to be built,” Frank said:
“We will be specifically targeting homebuyers in the middle to upper income bracket, and as I said, the average price of homes in the initial phase will be in the $ 350,000 arena, ranging up to $ 3 million in the final phase. “
Will there be a race to buy if/when the development gets off the ground?

Frank Singleton, Cataloochee Wilderness Resort spokesman, fields another question about Dean Moses and his involvement with the proposed mega-development in Jonathan Creek, NC.
February 7th, 2008 Categories: Cataloochee Wilderness Resort
Frank Singleton responded to another question regarding Dean Moses‘ involvement with the proposed Jonathan Creek development named Catalochee Wilderness Resort here in Haywood County. Questions have been submitted by the public to our local newspaper for submission to the ‘powers that be’ for answers.
“Question: Please explain, in detail, the involvement of Dean Moses. Given his past in Haywood County and failed projects that left many, many people unpaid in this county in the past, the citizens of this county need to know exactly where he is involved, to what degree, and how much he stands to gain. Please make this answer refer also to his involvement as detailed in the already filed lawsuit in Tennessee where it is clear he is far from the minor player he is referred to sometimes here. He was often referred to as a consultant or advisor in the past failed projects here, but it was clear to those involved he was a key player then as well. Please keep that in mind when replying.
Answer: Cataloochee Companies LLC does not speak for Mr. Moses, nor does the company necessarily owe anyone an explanation regarding consulting firms and other contracted entities. However, I will regardless attempt to answer appropriately. Cataloochee Companies LLC and the project management team have significant experience in development projects and is confident through their own due diligence that they have contracted with the right companies to make the development successful. The company has no interest in becoming involved in issues in which it has not been involved, nor does it wish to incur liability by commenting on employees or consultants with the companies it has selected to be a part of the project. That would include any vendettas that may exist between individuals and Mr. Moses, or any employees of contracted companies. ” Read the rest of the answer.
Is Dean Moses mentioned in the book (Whirlwind: The Butcher Banking Scandal) about the East Tennessee Banking Scandal?

How do the Haywood County, NC County Commissioners feel about growth in Jonathan Creek, setbacks and windmills?
January 20th, 2008 Categories: Cataloochee Wilderness Resort, Hot Local Topics
Haywood County, NC growth issues were the subject of a few discussions during last week’s Board of County Commissioners‘ retreat. Maggie Valley, Waynesville, Canton, Clyde, and Lake Junaluska and surrounding areas are all experiencing growth, and the problems inherent therein. No votes or formal actions are taken at the retreats… the informal discussions at the retreats lead to more formal actions at future Board meetings. The Cataloochee Wilderness Resort in Jonathan Creek, referred to as the ‘proposed mega development,’ was the subject of a few discussions at the retreat, needless to say.
“Commissioner Mary Ann Enloe said it is important to remember not a single parcel of land has yet been acquired in the Jonathan Creek area for the proposed mega development, and if landowners wanted to sell their land, it was their choice.
My suggestion is to figure out a way property owners who want to sell can sell it to a conservancy where it won’t be developed, and they won’t lose money, Enloe said. “
Check back for a report on the next County Commissioner’s meeting (January 22nd).

Who has taken aim at John “Thunder” Thornton relative to the Cataloochee Wilderness Resort in Jonathan Creek, NC?
January 10th, 2008 Categories: Cataloochee Wilderness Resort
Haywood County, NC’s own Z. Dean Moses struck back at Tennessee’s John “Thunder” Thornton. A response and counter-claim for damages, to the tune of $5mil plus, were filed in December, 2007 by Z. Dean Moses, after being sued by Thornton in November, 2007 and accused of fraudulently misappropriating money that belongs to Thornton relative to a Cataloochee Wilderness Resort Joint Venture Agreement.
“In a response filed in December, Moses denied that Thornton’s consent was required for the transfer of funds from escrow and denied that the transfer was either wrongful or fraudulent. In last month’s filing, Moses argued that money loaned by Thornton is not due for repayment because the condition for repayment has not occurred.
In addition, Moses filed a counter-claim in which he alleged that Thornton has refused to be involved in meaningful decision-making regarding the project and failed to perform duties of his position as an officer or member of entities involved in it. The counterclaim also alleged that Thornton has not participated in negotiations to obtain financing commitments for the project.”
Stay tuned for the next salvo!
