KNOXVILLE – Hank Williams Jr., the country music star, will attend the memorial service Saturday for Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton in Dandridge, according to a Williams spokesperson in Nashville.

The service is set for 1 p.m. at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Dandridge.

Sutton, 62, a cultural icon in Appalachia, was a lifelong maker of illegal whiskey in East Tennessee. He committed suicide in March just before he was to report to federal prison to serve an 18-month sentence on a conviction of distilling and selling moonshine.

Kirt Webster, publicist for Williams, said the country music legend will fly into Morristown and will be at the memorial service to pay his respects. He would not say how Williams knew Sutton, or for how long.

“He will be there to meet with Popcorn’s family and friends, not to perform,” Webster said.

Williams is expected to leave Morristown after the memorial and not attend a planned procession in Parrottsville after the Dandridge service.
