Would you like that on the rocks or straight up? Liquor-by-the-drink with a twist of controversy in Waynesville, NC.

Will we soon be able to indulge in libations in restaurants in Waynesville, NC after the May primary? Time will tell… but in the meantime, sides will be taken and points will be made, providing more good fodder for the media, and fuel for ’round table’ discussions around town.

“While the community rejected allowing liquor in restaurants by a margin of nearly 2-1 in 1989, some business owners think public opinion may have since softened toward the idea.

“I think they just realize it’s a business decision, not moral. I think that’s what lost it for us the last time was it was more of a moral issue. I think a lot of people don’t really see it that way anymore,” said Shawn Smathers, manager at Headlight’s Bar and Grill on Main Street.”
