Dignitaries and a standing-room only crowd attended the Haywood County Board of Commissioners January 7, 2008 Opening Ceremony meeting for the 2008 Haywood County Bicentennial. The list of dignitaries celebrating the upcoming year of festivities for Haywood County, NC’s 200th birthday included The Honorable Heath Shuler, United States Congressman - 11th District, The Honorable John Snow, North Carolina Senator - 50th District, The Honorable Joe Sam Queen, North Carolina Senator - 47th District, The Honorable Ray Rapp, North Carolina Representative - 118th District, and The Honorable R. Phillip Haire, North Carolina Representative - 119th District. Commemorative tee shirts were presented to the dignataries by Mary Ann Enloe, Chairman, Bicentennial Celebration.
The 12 themes proclaimed to celebrate the 200th birthday of Haywood County, NC during 2008 are:
1. January – Opening Ceremony on January 7 during the Board of Commissioners meeting.
2. February – Schools & Colleges
3. March – Natural Resources
4. April – 19th Century Settlers
5. May – Veterans’ Month
6. June – Haywood County Towns and Businesses
7. July – Tourism
8. August – Agriculture
9. September – Mountain Music and Dance
10. October – Old-Time Church Services
11. November – 20th Century Settlers
12. December – Historic Courtroom Drama, History Book Signing, Wrap-Up
